How Knight’s Fire Safety Exposed a “Luxury Client” Scam — Protect Your Small Business
Every day, small business owners receive messages that sound perfect—professional, polished, and too good to be true. Here’s how we handled one and the five red flags to watch for.
What Happened
Recently, Knight’s Fire Safety in Clovis, California was approached by someone claiming to be the Head of Security for a High-Net-Worth Family with several luxury residences in the Bay Area. The request seemed legitimate: fire safety surveys, equipment checks, and natural-disaster training for staff.
But as the conversation continued, the details began to shift—approvals that never finalized, changing dates, and vague references to “CFOs” and “clients.” When asked for property addresses or proof of the client, the tone changed from polite to defensive.
How This Scam Works
- A scammer pretends to represent a wealthy client or estate.
- They request legitimate services (fire safety, construction, cleaning, etc.).
- They send a fake check for more than the quoted amount.
- They ask you to “forward” part of that money to another vendor—before the check bounces.
The goal? To make you lose your hard-earned funds and trust.
- Instant praise & urgency (“approved,” “CFO pending”) with no substance.
- Vague “luxury” project—no addresses, no verifiable names.
- Changing stories or dates every message.
- Talk of “bank details” or checks before a contract.
- Defensive tone when you ask basic verification questions.
Protect Your Business
- Verify identities: call a switchboard, check LinkedIn, confirm the domain.
- Use written agreements: require a signed contract before payment talk.
- Never forward funds from a check: wait for cleared payments only.
- Walk away if it feels off: you owe no one your trust without proof.
