1. RT-130 – Wildland Fire Safety Refresher (Wildland-Focused)

Course Description

This RT-130 Wildland Fire Safety Refresher is designed for wildland firefighters, engine crews, Fire Apparatus Engineers (FAE), contractor firefighters, and fireline support personnel. The course refreshes critical life-safety principles required for annual readiness prior to fireline assignment, with instruction grounded in real-world wildland and engine company experience.

This course follows the intent and learning objectives of NWCG RT-130 guidance. Course acceptance and applicability toward red-card requirements are determined by the student’s employing agency or Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ).

Target Audience

  • Wildland Firefighters (Hand Crew, Engine, Helitack support)
  • Firefighter II / Fire Apparatus Engineers
  • Contractor firefighters and support personnel
  • Dozer and heavy equipment operators (safety-focused track)

Course Length

Learning Objectives

Upon completion, students will be able to:

Module 1 – Annual Wildland Safety Briefing

  • Current fire environment and seasonal outlook
  • Recent incident reviews and lessons learned
  • Duty to act vs duty to survive

Module 2 – LCES Refresher

  • Lookouts: who, where, and when
  • Communications: redundancy and clarity
  • Escape Routes: realistic, timed, and maintained
  • Safety Zones: size, location, and reassessment

Module 3 – 10 Standard Fire Orders & 18 Watch Out Situations

  • Orders as decision-making tools
  • Applying the 18 Watch Outs in real time
  • Case studies from wildland and engine operations

Module 4 – Entrapment Avoidance

  • Common wildland entrapment scenarios
  • Terrain, weather, fuels, and alignment
  • When to disengage early

Module 5 – Fire Shelter Review

  • When shelter deployment is appropriate
  • Abandoning equipment considerations
  • Post-deployment realities (no live deployment)

Module 6 – Human Factors & Risk Management

  • Fatigue, complacency, and production pressure
  • Situational awareness and communication breakdowns
  • Near-miss reporting and learning culture

Module 7 – Operational Breakouts (As Applicable)

  • Engine company and FAE decision-making
  • Contractor and heavy equipment safety considerations
