Preparing for your EMT-B skills exam can feel overwhelming. Whether you’re testing for the first time or retesting specific skills, preparation and repetition are key.

🚑 How to Use This Guide

Do not just watch the videos.

Instead:

  1. Watch once for understanding.

  2. Watch again and pause step-by-step.

  3. Practice the skill physically while following along.

  4. Review your NREMT skill sheet simultaneously.

  5. Have someone critique you.

Repetition builds confidence.


1️⃣ BVM (Bag Valve Mask) Ventilation

What to Look For:

  • Proper airway positioning

  • Head tilt / chin lift or jaw thrust

  • Correct mask seal

  • Visible chest rise

  • Proper ventilation rate

  • Oxygen attachment and flow rate

  • Verbalizing scene safety and PPE

Common Mistakes Students Make:

  • Poor mask seal

  • Ventilating too fast

  • Forgetting oxygen

  • Not reassessing pulse


2️⃣ Cardiac Arrest / CPR & AED Scenario

Key Testing Focus Areas:

  • Scene safety

  • Pulse check (no more than 10 seconds)

  • Immediate high-quality compressions

  • Correct compression depth and rate

  • Proper AED pad placement

  • Clear verbal commands

What Examiners Look For:

  • Minimal interruptions

  • Correct compression ratio

  • Clear leadership communication

  • Immediate action


3️⃣ Medical Patient Assessment

This is one of the most failed skills.

Remember the Flow:

  • Scene size-up

  • Primary assessment

  • Chief complaint

  • SAMPLE history

  • OPQRST

  • Vital signs

  • Secondary assessment

  • Reassessment

Common Fail Points:

  • Missing life threats

  • Forgetting SAMPLE

  • Poor communication

  • Not verbalizing findings


4️⃣ Trauma Patient Assessment

Focus On:

  • Mechanism of injury

  • Rapid trauma assessment

  • DCAP-BTLS

  • Immediate interventions

  • Spinal precautions (if required by protocol)

  • Priority decision


5️⃣ Childbirth / OB Skills

Critical Steps:

  • PPE

  • Controlling the head

  • Checking for nuchal cord

  • Supporting shoulders

  • Suctioning airway

  • Drying and warming infant

  • APGAR scoring
